Sony was originally called Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo, which means Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering Company, when it was formed in 1946 by Masaru Ibuka and Akio Morita. Since then the Sony Corporation has established itself as a global leader in electronics with the parent Sony Group comprising of five sectors including games, motion pictures and music, electronics, financial services and other businesses.
In 2006, the Sony Corporation bought the digital SLR camera section of Konica Minolta and released its` first digital slr camera, called the Alpha DSLR A100, in July 2006. The 10 megapixel digital SLR was well received and won many awards. In October 2007, Sony released the 12 megapixel Alpha DSLR A700 to compete with Nikon`s D300 & Canon`s EOS 40D.
