Canon digital cameras (both SLR and compact) are the market leaders in the digital camera market. Canon professional digital SLR cameras are also the leading cameras for professional photographers around the world. Canon began in 1933 when it was called the `Precision Optical Instruments Laboratory`. The first camera was the Kwanon. It was the first Japanese 35mm focal-plane shutter camera and was created to compete with rangefinder cameras from Germany. The name Canon was first used in 1935 for the Hansa Canon rangefinder camera.
